A sensory deficit is when someone’s senses do not function properly. It happens when the sensory system sends less input to the brain for processing than it should. Some possible manifestations include a loss or impairment of the olfactory system (smell), the visual system, the auditory system (hearing), or it may impact body awareness, otherwise known as proprioception.

Occupational therapy can benefit those with a sensory deficit. This may include activities such as balance exercises, exposure to various textures, and more. Developing strategies and tools for self-regulation will help ease sensory integration.
