The nervous system sends sensory input to the brain, where it all needs to be processed, organized, and responded to appropriately. If any part of that sequence doesn’t happen correctly, then it is known as sensory processing disorder or sensory integration disorder.
Occupational therapists can use repeated exposure to stimuli in a structured way so that the nervous system learns how to process and respond to them. This type of therapy is often used as part of a sensory diet strategy.
