What is Stimming?

“Stimming” is short for “self-stimulation.” These repetitive behaviors are often, but not exclusively, used by people with sensory processing disorders as a coping mechanism.

Usually, people think of hand flapping or headbanging, but something as mundane as twirling your hair is a self-stimulatory behavior. When done safely and constructively, stimming behaviors can greatly improve self-regulation. If not safe or functional, then we replace them with an alternative that provides similar sensory input.

Using a chewy, instead of gnawing a pencil, is a great option. Try a small fidget that you can easily fit into your pocket. Identifying what repetitive behaviors you tend to do will help you find the best tool to help you self-regulate.
