Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common childhood motor disability caused by abnormal brain development, impacting the ability to control the muscles. It is difficult to balance, maintain posture and move around.

Symptoms of CP might change and depend on the disease’s severity.

  1. Spastic CP– the most common form is increased muscle tone, leading to stiff, awkward movements.

  2. Dyskinetic CP– uncontrollable hand, arm, foot, and leg movements; sometimes it impacts the face and tongue, too. Muscle tone can change over the course of one day.

  3. Ataxic CP– difficulty with balance and coordination in walking, very controlled actions like writing or quick movements.

A mix of physical, occupational, and speech therapies can help improve the quality of life for those with CP. Other treatment options include medicine, surgery, or braces.
