Social-emotional learning, or SEL, is the continuous process of learning and developing skills that help manage emotions and engagement with others. There are several categories that fall under SEL.


  1. Self-awareness, or being able to identify our own feelings and needs

  2. Self-management, actually managing those emotions and desires

  3. Social awareness, relating to others empathetically and viewing situations from their perspective

  4. Relationship skills, such as cooperation with others, communication and being able to resolve conflicts

  5. Responsible decision making, or being able to consider social norms and the consequences of our actions for others
