Also known as “low muscle tone,” hypotonia refers to a decrease in the amount of tension in your muscles. This tension is what allows you to do things like sit, stand or pick up objects. People with hypotonia might also develop muscle weakness.


Hypotonia is a symptom of numerous, often inherited conditions, including cerebral palsy. It’s typically detected in babies by the time they are 6 months old, as they have delayed motor development.


Depending on the underlying cause, hypotonia can improve with therapy over time. Sometimes it depends on the infection or other condition being successfully treated, but if hypotonia is inherited then it does persist throughout adulthood.
